Classroom Research

There are many forms of classroom research.  Rob has started several projects regarding this topic at Santa Ana College.  One is called Classroom Research through Peer Coaching.  This includes a series of activities that allow a team of teachers to observe one another.  The steps include:

  1. Reflection where the instructor keeps a log of impressions and ideas after each class period for at least a week before moving on to the next step.
  2. A pre-observation meeting with those who will observe the class where the person being observed shares what he or she wishes the observers to look for.
  3. Observations where observers script student interaction and other areas requested with a focus on learning not on teaching. Observations are NOT evaluative.
  4. A post-observation meeting where the observation(s) are discussed and goals made.  The discussions are about learning and not about teaching.
  5. Steps 1-4 are repeated.

Throughout the process, comments are made on a blog set up specifically for this process.
